Summer Vacation Guide

South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas!

By Mary Monahan April 27, 2024

Need to get out of town? We have rounded up our road trips that are more than a day or two, these are vacation-type trips. Enjoy!

My family and I went to St. Louis for a vacation. I think St. Louis is underrated. Most of its activities are free (including a phenomenal zoo and many museums). We had a great time and hope to go back!

Need to get out of town for a day or two? Kansas City, KS/MO is three hours away and there are great family attractions. We visited over LPS spring break last year and crammed in as much as we could in two days: Legoland, Sea Life and Science City. Here are 15 family-friendly places to visit.

Arkansas is only six hours from Lincoln. We had never been to Arkansas before (one more state checked off the list!). We enjoyed hiking and exploring, museums, and shopping. Here are our highlights and what I recommend doing while you are there. Two big takeaways: most of the activities that we did were free. Secondly, we found NW Arkansas to be very dog friendly. If we had known how much so we would have brought our dog.
We stayed in Bentonville, Arkansas, which is the birthplace of Wal-Mart, and a good jumping off point to visit the surrounding areas.

If you go to Colorado and need a place to stretch your legs-check these out. They are phenomenal and each have walking/biking paths so the kids can play and then you can go for a walk before getting back in the car. Both parks listed also have dog parks so your furry friend can get some exercise too!

I grew up in Northeastern Wyoming and went on a lot of road trips, both East and West. Here are my favorite places to stop and visit in Northwestern Nebraska and Northeastern Wyoming. I am biased since I grew up there but I think it is so beautiful and I hope you find yourself in the Black Hills, Badlands and the Big Horns one day!

We visited Yellowstone after our initial vacation plans fell through during July of 2020. It was a relatively last minute trip in terms of a Yellowstone vacation with lots of reading and research in the car but it was a great socially distanced vacation with no WiFi and much more outdoor time than our kids ever want again. If you are planning on going this summer or next, read on to find out our best tips!
