There are few combinations better than kids and water. Throw in some sand, buckets, floaties and friends and you almost have paradise.
Twice in the past two weeks we have driven out to Branched Oak Lake to spend the morning swimming, building sandcastles and exploring the beach. Branched Oak Lake is Northwest of Lincoln off of US 34. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from central Lincoln and is a gorgeous drive. The drive is one of my favorite parts; I enjoy seeing the small family farms.
You can buy a yearly pass for $20 or a day pass for $5. We go straight to Area 10 which has plenty of shade, picnic tables, restrooms and a marked off swim area. The water is warmer than most of the pools in Lincoln and the beach is pretty clean. There is the occasional piece of trash scattered about. We go on weekday mornings and we are usually one of a few people there. More people start to come as early afternoon rolls in but for the most part we have the beach to ourselves.
You can also fish, boat and camp at Branched Oak Lake although we haven't tried any of those activities yet.
Overall we've had a great time. I love seeing my children find the extraordinary in collecting sticks, digging to China and splashing endlessly.
