Sledding Fun in Lincoln, NE

By Mary Monahan December 27, 2017

Pull on your snow pants, bring out the sleds and get ready for fun! (Or bring a lawn chair and coffee in a thermos and spend an afternoon watching your kids zip down a hill-that is more my style.)

Pioneers Park isn't just any sledding hill, there are ramps for kids to go flying down! USA Today has given it one of the coveted Top 10 sledding spots in the US. It is an exhilarating hill for older kids and adults but if you're toting little ones I'd choose a different hill.

Holmes Lake has an enormous hill that dozens and dozens of kids can go down at once. If you have kids that like to race one another, this is the hill to do that.

Mahoney State Park is a short drive from Lincoln and has great toboggan runs. You can warm up afterwards making arts and crafts at the Owen Marina or having lunch at the Mahoney Grill.

Tanker Hill is a hidden gem in Lincoln. It is very, very steep. You will fly down the hill and spend about 10-15 minutes walking back up it so it isn't for the short-legged (aka toddlers). It is located in Arnold Heights Park.

Southeast High School has a HILL. My daughters could spend all day there. In one hour, my son and I only went six times. It is quite a workout climbing up the hill.

What does your kid need for a fun (and safe) afternoon of sledding?

  • Warm Clothing-Make sure that your child is properly dressed with arms, legs and head covered. If possible, use gear that is water-resistant.
  • Chap Stick-Most kids won’t even notice their cracking lips, but it happens after an hour or two of sledding. Chap stick fits nicely in a coat pocket.
  • Safe Equipment-Check all of your children's sledding gear before you head out. A cracked sled can lead to serious injuries.
  • Inspect the Hill-Before giving your kids the go-ahead take a quick look at the hill and make sure that there aren't large rocks, branches or other items on the hill that could hurt a child if they ran into or over it.
