Why I Became a Pediatrician

Lincoln Pediatric Group

By Mary Monahan December 28, 2017

We are at the pediatrician's office a lot: ear infections, random rashes, standard check-ups, shots. I often wonder why someone becomes a pediatrician? Many of their patients can't even talk and a lot of their patients scream at the sight of them. Recently, we asked the doctors at Lincoln Pediatric Group why they chose pediatrics over other medical fields.

Dr Kate Gogela said, ā€œBecause I have always loved being around kids and wanted to do something to impact the lives of children. I enjoy being able to watch them grow and develop at checkups and make them feel better at ill visits.ā€

Dr. Shelley Nelson answered, ā€œIā€™ve always loved how fun-loving and resilient kids are.Ā  I also love pediatrics because of the focus on preventative care and the relationship you get to build with parents and familiesā€.

Dr. Phil Boucher responded, "I love taking care of families. Ā Children have such unique medical needs and you get to take the family into context when treating the child. Ā The diversity of diagnoses is huge. Ā The illnesses of newborns and those of the 2 month old, 2 year old, and 20 year old are vastly different. Ā Each day and every patient is entirely unique."
