A Note From the Publisher-January 23, 2020

By Mary Monahan January 23, 2020

I feel like mother nature is messing with us. This is what I am imagining she is saying:

"What is gonna happen today, Lincolnites? You never know when the temperature is just at freezing, do you? Will it be a slushy mess? Or will there be so much ice that you can skate down your street? Will it be snow or will it be rain? Ooh, what about thunder-snow? Tee-hee! Guess we will see!" (hands clapping gleefully)

My husband and I were at a happy hour at a neighbor's house last week. Our friends walked about five blocks to get there. They slid on the ice, fell, laughed and got back up. Not us. We only live one block away but we drove there. Some people are terrified of spiders or snakes or speaking in public. My greatest fear? Ice. If you have ever fallen on ice and broken a bone-you know the fear that comes with stepping onto it and praying you don't slip. So, I will spend the next few days like I have the last few: walking like a penguin, treading carefully and saying over and over, "You can do this. You can do this."

My husband thinks the ice is fun. He will grab our daughters' hands and the three will slide the whole way down the driveway on the walk to school-hooting and hollering the entire way. From the window, I marvel at his ability to keep himself upright. My daughters will turn back to the house and wave at me with big smiles on their faces. I'm glad that they have him to show them that frozen water isn't something to be terrified of, that it can be fun. He is like Elsa-the cold never bothered him anyway.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mary
