Like many parents throughout Lincoln, last week Tish Kloch was just finishing up her first week of "homeschooling" while trying to manage working from home and this really meant her 8 year old daughter and 12 year old son watched way too much TV while trying to eat all of the snacks. She was feeling defeated, defeated by a virus that the only way we can control, is by staying away from friends, coworkers, classmates and dance friends.
She had heard news stories of neighborhood developments doing scavenger hunts or putting up Shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. She wanted to think of way to give back to everyone but also to find something for kids and families to do and maybe bring a smile to some faces and that is how The Great Lincoln Egg Hunt began! Her idea was for an egg hunt that the whole city of Lincoln could participate in. People could print off eggs and color them, put them in a window, on the door or some other visible area and when children walk around the neighborhood or when they are riding in cars they could "hunt" for eggs.
When you join the group you can download pictures of eggs, color them and tape them to the window or door. Her daughter has connected with her dance friends and dance teacher by seeing their eggs posted in the The Great Lincoln Egg Hunt Facebook group, her son with his math teacher. Her kids have went on bike rides with her husband, taken the dog for a walk, they have taken a car ride as a family to go on an egg hunt as well.
We all miss that connection with others and that is what she is hoping to do with The Great Lincoln Egg Hunt, connect with others, spread some happiness, be together at a time when we physically can’t be together. Her husband was the first member of the group after she created it on the morning of March 20th. He said when the reporters called he would be her PR person and she laughed. Lincoln has not disappointed. As of the writing of this article, membership of TheGreatLincolnEggHunt is just over 8000.
Our kids may not get a traditional egg hunt this year, but hopefully they get something better.
