Fall is a great time of year to take family photos. The colors outside are vibrant, the weather isn't too hot or too cold and the lighting is beautiful. So, get your family into color-coordinated outfits, bribe your kids with candy and choose a beautiful spot.
1) Holmes Lake
The water and the surrounding trees make for a beautiful photo! Why take photos at a park? Besides the beautiful flora and fauna, people (especially) kids interact with the environment in ways that they don't in a studio setting. One of my favorite professional photos is on my kids throwing leaves on a playground! This family photo was taken by Toni Pohlen of Toni Pohlen Photography. |
2) The Sunken Gardens
Get there before the first frost and you will have pictures filled with foliage and the last of summer's flowers. This spot is a photographer's dream and in the early evening, it is a prime spot for picture takers. If you aren't a fan of people watching you pose, I wouldn't recommend this spot. This adorable photo was taken by Genesis Photography. Bonnie's studio is located in Cortland, Nebraska, 15 miles south of Lincoln. She uses natural light and have an abundance of props for your session! Genesis Photography specializes in maternity, newborns, children, and families. |
3)Haymarket
Downtown Lincoln is filled with hidden spots for great family photos! The architecture and lines create fantastic shots. With a more solid background you can play with fun clothing color combinations. Monica Bee Photography provided this photo. |
4) East Campus
UNL's lesser known campus, East Campus, has beautiful green space and is much less crowded than City Campus. You can go to the Dairy Store after pictures (use the ice cream to bribe your kids into smiling for the photos). Toni Pohlen Photography is owned by Toni Pohlen. She believes in capturing authentic love and connection between individuals is a million times more powerful and more beautiful than any posed photo could ever be, even if it's not the "perfect" shot. |
5) Tree Lined Streets
Look for a street with trees on both sidewalks and possibly trees in the median. The midwest fall gives us oaks and maple trees which are stunning and are a beautiful addition to any family photo. A great area for this is the Country Club area. Monica Buscher of Monica Bee Photography is a natural light photographer specializing in children and families. |
6) Pioneers Park-
An incredibly versatile spot with beautiful foliage, open prairies, grand columns and more is why so many people choose Pioneers Park as "the spot" to take family photos. The natural light from the outdoors adds interest and dimenion to photos, professional photographers know how to use the light to get beautiful results. Genesis Photography provided this Mommy and Me photo taken at Pioneers Park. |
7) Your Home
Jenny Gegg's favorite location for portraits is your own house. That way many years down the road your kids can not only look at your family but also see parts of their childhood home as well. That will always bring a smile to their faces. Jenny is a classically trained photographer with a B.S. in Photography and has a Professional Photography certification. She creates artistic images of the highest quality for her clients. |
8) Pumpkin Patch- We have an abundance of pumpkin farms and fruit orchards surrounding us. The bright orange of a pumpkin field or shiny red apple orchard is a fun and colorful backdrop to any photo.
9) The Capitol Building- This building has great architectural details including multiple arches. It would be a good space to stage a large family photo. You must have written permission to take photos at the Capitol Building. To acquire permission call 402-471-0048.
