Visiting Yellowstone: Our Guide to Going With Your Family

Plan Your Trip

By Mary Monahan December 31, 2020

Like a lot of others, Covid-19 altered our vacation summer plans in 2020. For several years, we had talked about visiting Yellowstone with our kids but it never worked out. Then, our original 2020 summer plans were cancelled and we decided to try for Yellowstone! We visited during July of 2020.

It was a relatively last minute trip in terms of a Yellowstone vacation with lots of reading and research in the car but it was a great socially distanced vacation with no WiFi and much more outdoor time than our kids ever want again. If you are planning on going this summer or next, read on to find out our best tips!

It is at least 14 hours to the East entrance of Yellowstone National Park from Lincoln, NE. That is without stopping and without traffic. Most people that we know made it in about 18 hours. We chose to stop halfway. Looking for good stopping points? Click here for Best Places to Stop on the Way to Yellowstone

It is recommended to spend 3-5 days in the park if you want "to see" the entire park. We did the entire park in 3.5 days but we were exhausted when it was done. Despite spending 3.5 days there we felt like we only saw a tiny bit of the park and are already planning our second trip. For Our 3-4 Day Yellowstone Itinerary click here.

The best part of Yellowstone is getting off the beaten path. We spent a lot of time researching hikes and walks within the park. When we visited our kids were 10, 8 and 4. Our goal was hit the big highlights of the park: Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone Lake and Old Faithful and then head out on our own.

Planning ahead is key for a successful trip to Yellowstone. It is bigger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined. For our Top Tips for a Successful Trip to Yellowstone click here.
