📖 Summer Reading Programs for Children, Tweens, & Teens

May 26, 2021

It’s no secret that kids who read during the summer months fare better on fall reading tests than kids who don't. A great way to keep them reading is to participate in a Summer Reading Program.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program

Kids in 1st through 6th grade can read any eight books this summer and record them in a Summer Reading Journal. Bring the completed Reading Journal into a Barnes & Noble store July 1 through August 31, and your child gets to choose a free book from the list featured on the journal.

Learn more about the program and get summer reading suggestions for all ages at https://www.barnesandnobleinc.com/our-stores-communities/summer-reading-program/.

Lincoln has two Barnes and Noble locations:

The 2021 Summer Reading Challenge will offer the same coupons, perks and prizes as in past years with a few added bonuses.

  • People who preregister from May 21-May 31 will be eligible to win $50 gift cards from Hy-Vee, Super Saver, Walmart, Target or Russ’s Market.
  • Each registrant will receive a plant-able seed paper bookmark, a ticket to a Saltdogs baseball game, and a book bag while supplies last.
  • Readers who log their reading time in Beanstack will earn tickets they can put towards drawings for gift cards for food, entertainment, and fun activities. The more you read, the more tickets you earn.
  • We will have Take and Make Craft Kits for young children and for tweens and teens.
  • We’ve moved our weekly story times outdoors in June and July

The New York Times Summer Reading Contest

Teens worldwide are invited to participate in The New York Times Summer Reading Contest from June 11–August 21, 2021. Each Friday, The Times poses two questions: "What got your attention in The Times this week? Why?" Responses must be 300 words or fewer; only one submission per person per week.

Teens (ages 13-19) can choose from any article, Op-Ed, video, graphic, podcast, or photograph published in 2021 on any topic they like. Tweens (ages 11-12) can ask an adult to submit a comment via a form on the student's behalf. The New York Times will announce winners every Tuesday and publish their writing.
