Best Halloween Houses 2023

By Mary Monahan October 21, 2022

Years ago, a sweet mama wrote us saying that her child couldn't participate in trick-or -treating but that they would like to do something festive for Halloween, like driving around and looking at spooky decorations. We put the word out and heard from so many Lincolnites about spookily decorated homes.

Four years ago we began handing out signs. Why? First, so people knew they were in the correct place and secondly, to thank the home owners who put so much effort into their decorations. They make our Halloween special so thank you! You'll often see the homeowners out working in their yards, say hi! They are so excited to chat and show you their decor. I was lucky to talk to many of them this year when dropping off signs and I always love to hear how their excitement for Halloween started.

Most of these homes cannot be seen in the rain so please plan accordingly around the weather.

Big thank you to Matt Kirkland at Giving Realty for sponsoring this with us! To learn more about Matt and how he can help you with your realty needs, see his website.

2011 Ranger Cir (21st and Superior)-This house is deemed Smithville Haunt, what was once a simple decrepit cemetery is now a sight to haunt your nightmares. This is one of the scarier houses on our list. There are skeletons, ghouls, and many animatronics spread across the entire yard. I suggest going during the night for the full effect. This house is interactive; you walk through a spooky path! New this year- a creepy fishing shack. Lights will be on at dusk till 11 on weekends and 930 on weekdays.

NW 54th St and W Superior-This house was nominated by a neighbor and when we drove up my daughter and I loved seeing the row of giant skeletons in the yard. The owners came out as we were putting the "Best House" sign on their porch and it was then that we learned how passionate this family is about decorating. Eva and Jose got into Halloween because their son was born on Halloween. They were so kind and invited us into their front room to see the indoor decorations. This was when I realized I was with a true Halloween fan. The inside of their house is completely decorated for Halloween-it felt like I was on the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World. Absolutely incredible! Jose is currently building more decorations and will continue to put them up until Halloween night.

The Haunted Woods Presents "Off With Their Heads!" at 9420 Holdrege-This isn't a house but an experience-like visiting a Haunted House. A big shout out to Micah, the teen responsible for this production. This is an interactive walk and it is only open October 27-28 from 7:00-10:00 PM. Admission is a can of food to be donated to Jacob's Well. The Haunted Woods is scary so beware and parents use your best judgement. Organizers suggest you park along 98th street or at Prior Pines Tree Farm (limited parking spots) and walk to the beginning of the trail, walking in the grassy area along Holdrege, permission has been giving from the homeowners. 824 South 51st Street-Located near 48th and Randolph, this house is best at night with the fog machine and lights going. Most of the decorations are hand-made from years and years of decorating. John, is a huge Halloween fan and loves to make and decorate for the holiday.  My favorite part of this house is the new skeleton with the guitar. John loves Halloween so much, he even made his own horror movie one year using his decorations!

2616 Rathbone (near South & 27th St)-Homeowners, Greyson and Molly create an incredible Halloween show. This is a full production. You need to park on the street and walk over to watch the show. Greyson built the mausoleum from recycled materials. This house will be ready Friday, October 27th through Tuesday, October 31st. On Halloween night, a permit has been pulled to block off this street so families can safely watch the show. It is awesome!

31st St and Woodsdale-Located in the Country Club, this house has decorations on all sides (including a creepy carnival). There is a lot of detail and it is great to visit during the day and take it all in. Every year, Les and Shawn add new items. The giant skulls are my new fave!  But my biggest question-where is it all stored?! This house is also a great destination for Christmas decor too; add it to your list for December. Click here for more pictures of this house.

3700 Worthington-Rik and Jenny Gropp are the creators behind the incredible, life size pirate ship. This is a not a kit; they made this. Rik tore apart old pallets and built the ship himself! They try to repurpose as much as they can. They add it to every year and new additions include the oars on ship rowing and Captain Jack standing up! You can visit this house day or night and admire the handiwork. It is lit up on weekdays from 6:30-9:30 PM and on the weekend from 6:30-11:00 PM. There will be a Food Bank collection bin out front October 24-October 31; please consider donating.

6000 Rosebud Circle-This house is a scary one! Not for the faint of heart. Owner Ben, has 15 animatronics, all are motion sensor activated. He encourages people to get out of their vehicle and walk to the front door to set them all off. Please stay on the sidewalks, No lawn walking. This display looks best at night, after 7:00pm it really starts haunting! Ben started decorated after buying a Halloween butler at Home Depot and it has grown from there. There are some BIG jump scares here!

41st St and Duxhal (near Old Cheney)-Our next Halloween House sign is for Grave Grabbers by Todd. He manufactures all his decor each year and it is changes yearly. How into Halloween is Todd? He covers the siding on his house with different siding to make it more creepy. Yes, you read that right. He documents how he makes his decor on his instagram "grave grabbers."I adore this year's theme-it is a Tiki vibe! Go here day or night. It is best at night but fun during the day too.Located near Duxhal & 41st (near Old Cheney). He wants everyone to know that he is not done yet (It still looks great in my opinion!) 5810 South 88th (Old Cheney and 88th) The Nightmare Before Christmas house! Their yard is awesome and they have so many decorations themed around this movie. This house is fun during the day and at night but at night there is a bit more magic. Their decorations are joined by a radio station playing music from the movie.

6909 Beaver Creek Lane- This is a house with a great mix of decorations! There is something here for the whole family. A couple of spooky things and a lot of decor that are unique like a cobra (my personal favorite), a mermaid skeleton and more.

7400 S 32nd St-There is scary and then there is Brad’s house! If you like creepy, go visit this house! The work that goes into this is immense. The details at this house are incredible (and terrifying).

824 W. Arezzo Court-This is a great house for non-spooky fans of Halloween. It sings to you! The lights start at 6:30 pm on Fri and Sat they run till 11pm and Sun-Thurs till 10pm. There are eight songs: Ghost Busters, Grim Grinning Ghosts, A Michael Jackson compilation that ends with Thriller, Spooky Scary Skeletons, This is Halloween, Walk the Dinosaur, Devil Went Down to Georgia, and Enter Sandman.

Homeowner, Zach, has always liked going big for holidays ever since he was a kid. He saw one of these light shows on YouTube and was amazed. They do a Halloween and Christmas show. You listen to the songs on 90.5 FM from your car unless you visit during Halloween when the songs are pumped out to trick or treaters.
