Road Trip: Durham Museum

By Mary Monahan December 21, 2022

We have lived in Nebraska for almost ten years and had never been to the Durham Museum. After seeing Jimmy Kimmel feature their Christmas tree on his show, I knew that we had to go!

Your first step into the Durham is going to immediately be followed by, "Wow!" It is stunning and like going back in time. Part of the museum is housed in Union Station; I could have spent an hour just admiring the building and it's art deco style. Union Station was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service and U.S. Department of the Interior in 2016.

Look at that tree!
Union Station has several statues set up so you can imagine what it was like almost 100 years ago. You can even visit an old fashioned soda fountain.

The Durham Museum is home to exhibits about the history of our region and traveling exhibits. First, we visited the train which was everyone's favorite. You walk through several cars of a passenger train and it is so much fun to visualize what would have been happening at the time. It has the feeling of walking onto a movie set.

There is a small kids' area next to the passenger train with toy trains, legos and more building blocks. There is also a large model train with interactive buttons.

After exploring the train (we went through twice) we visited the history of the region exhibits. This area has life size examples of homes over the decades, covered wagons and a great exhibit about the Omaha tribe. We spent an hour going through this area and reading.

We finished our time at the Durham by going to the traveling exhibit: "Dressing the Abbey". I watched season after season of Downtown Abbey so I was excited. My kids were confused by my excitement over seeing dresses and suits but then they found the craft area and were happy to color while I gawked at the clothing. If you are a Downtown fan, "Dressing the Abbey" leaves January 8.

On January 28th, they will open "Hall of Heroes" which includes

  • Life-sized statues of the Incredible Hulk, Ironman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Panther and Superman (great for photo ops!).
  • A full-scale interactive recreation of the iconic 1960’s Batmobile and Batcave, and a showcase of the various gadgets used in the television series.
  • Movie props, reproductions and rare artifacts from past and present major motion pictures and television shows.

We had a great time and will definitely be going back!
