Park of the Week: Gene Leahy Mall

By Mary Monahan January 5, 2023

When we first moved to Nebraska years ago I had heard about the big slides at Gene Leahy Mall but by the time we got there, the mall was under construction. The construction is over (it was a big project). We finally went a few weeks ago and I LOVE this park. The slides are a blast; but more than that, the engineers of this park were thoughtful about playground equipment. It is a huge climbing structure that dozens of kids can use at the same time, that is for all sizes (cause teenagers are kids too) and it inspires imagination. Well done, Omaha!

Why am I sharing this in January? Because if there was ever a time kids needed to get out of the house and run around, it is during the winter.

  • Restrooms
  • Baby Swings
  • Slides
  • Climbing
  • Benches
  • Sports Fields

LOCATION

  • This park is located at 1001 Douglas St in Omaha, NE. It is next to the Old Market. The Mall is almost 10 acres with a reflecting pool, a slide area (with several kids of slides including the giant ones!), a big open space and an incredible climbing structure.

SPECIAL FEATURES & PLAYGROUND NOTES

  • I was blown away by the climbing structure at this park for two main reasons. One, I love unique parks and this is different. It isn't the standard slide, two swings and a couple of ladders kind park. Secondly, it is built for little and big kids because teenagers are kids too. My almost 5'8" child was having a great time climbing.
  • Under the climbing areas are tunnels and a jungle of cables that kids can explore.
  • Parents of escape artists-there is only one entrance and exit to the playground park (yeah!).
  • This park can accommodate a lot of kids; it is made for a crowd.
  • The slides are great! The two original large ones are there and many others are added.
  • Got babies? There are baby swings and baby slides.

BATHROOMS, PARKING & OTHER AMENITIES

  • There are bathrooms at this park.
  • Benches galore here! Lots of places to sit.
  • The playground area has turf so it will be hot on the feet in the summer.
  • Parking can be tricky at times but you'll find it. Just keep driving around.
  • There are tons of restaurants around Gene Leahy Mall. You can spend an afternoon easily here.
