Spring Break Day Camp at Morrill Hall

By Morrill Hall February 22, 2024

For the first time since the museum was founded in 1871, the University of Nebraska State Museum (UNSM) is offering day camps during Spring Break at its Morrill Hal location in Lincoln! Our museum houses over a million specimens of vertebrate fossils and extensive collections in other areas of natural history including paleontology, zoology, geology, parasitology, and more. There two 1-day camps offered.

SCIENCE SLEUTHS

For this spring break day camp, campers will get to put their investigation skills to the test. In the morning, we will travel back in time and explore clues from ancient animals that are larger than life. Then in the afternoon we will look up and around at the stars, planets, and cosmos that make up our solar system. This camp is best suited for ages 8-11.

NE: EXTRAORDINARY CREATURES

Did you know that opossums are the only marsupials in North America? And that they can eat around 800 ticks a day? For this spring break day camp, campers will learn about some unusual, sometimes misunderstood, and simply extraordinary creatures that call Nebraska home. They will also learn about  the important components of a natural habitat and explore some local ecosystems.   This camp is best suited for ages 5-7. March 15 | 9am – 4pm | K – 2nd grade

We stick to a 1:10 instructor to camper ratio to give participants guidance, positive experiences, and build meaningful relationships. We also emphasize having fun while learning with a variety of games and activities.

The education team chose the name “Discovery” because our main goal is to leave campers with awe-inspiring moments through hands-on experiences that invoke curiosity and a desire to learn more even after a camp is finished. The mission of Discovery Day Camp is to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for all campers and promote the discovery of our natural world through exploration, inquiry, and play. This is done through the leadership of our experienced education team and partnership with expert collection managers and researchers in the field.

At UNSM we care about giving visitors positive experiences as they explore our museums. The same is true for campers that participate in our Discovery Day Camp program. Too often children can feel lost in the shuffle in massive groups during programs.
