The 23rd Annual “Why I Want to Go to College” Writing Sweepstakes is officially here, offering students a unique chance to reflect on their educational goals, dream big, and share their aspirations — all while competing for exciting prizes.

Sponsored by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and the Omaha Storm Chasers, this sweepstakes invites 7th and 8th grade students to write essays about the importance of education and what they hope to achieve through higher learning. Whether they dream of becoming a scientist, an artist, or a community leader, this is an opportunity for students to express their goals and take a step toward turning those dreams into reality.

How to Enter

It’s easy to participate:

  1. Write an Essay: Students share their thoughts on "Why I Want to Go to College."
  2. Submit Your Entry: Essays can be  sent to Aniya Tate, Omaha Storm Chasers, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, NE      68046.
  3. Win Big!: Twelve winners will receive contributions to their NEST 529 Education Savings account, ranging in value from $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Nebraska winners will also receive Omaha Storm      Chasers tickets where they will be recognized during a brief ceremony prior to the game. 

Key Details

  • Who Can Enter: Students in the 7th or 8th grade in public, private, or home school. Three winners will be selected from each of Nebraska’s three U.S. Congressional Districts, and three winners will be selected from outside Nebraska.
  • Word Limit: Essays should be no more than 750 words.
  • Deadline: Be sure to submit your essay by March 31, 2025.
