Women, Infants, & Children Program Contributes to Healthier Families

June 30, 2025

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department and Family Service Lincoln WIC Programs may be able to help with your family’s nutritional needs. The WIC program serves pregnant, postpartum and breast-feeding women, infants and children under 5 years old. We offer support to anyone who cares for children under 5: moms, dads, grandparents, foster parents and guardians. WIC is also available to families who are experiencing homelessness. You’ve got this andwe are here to help.

WIC strengthens families by providing 4 core services: healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health and social services. Children who receive WIC have improved diets, decreased incidences of iron deficiency anemia, more regular medical care, up to date immunizations, and improved intellectual development that gets them ready for school.   WIC has Registered Dietitians to help pregnant moms eat healthily during pregnancy, give tips on how to navigate a picky eater, and help families utilize their WIC benefits by providing tips on shopping at the store and by providing easy to make recipes. Breastfeeding peer counselors are available to help moms with their breastfeeding journey.

WIC provides healthy food and helps stretch the food budget by providing items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fruit and vegetable juice, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, whole grain products such as bread, pasta, rice, and tortillas, dried and canned beans and peas, canned fish, infant formula, infant and adult cereal, baby food, and soy-based beverages.

Individuals receiving assistance from programs such as Medicaid, SNAP or Aid for Dependent Children (ADC) are automatically eligible for the WIC program. However, participation in these programs is not required to qualify for WIC services. Working families who do not qualify for these programs may still be income eligible for WIC. A Nebraska family of 4 with a gross income at or below $4,957/month may be eligible.
