Family Volunteer Opportunity: Huskers Helping the Homeless

August 22, 2025

GET IN THE GAME WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS - VOLUNTEER FOR HUSKERS HELPING THE HOMELESS!

Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach is huddled up and planning for the best defense against hunger and homelessness for the 29th annual Huskers Helping the Homeless during the weekend of September 20th. This volunteer event raises awareness and funds for Matt Talbot’s year-round hunger relief and homeless prevention services.

The Details
Volunteers of all ages are needed on Saturday, September 20, before the Nebraska vs. Michigan football game, to collect donations in downtown Lincoln. Shifts are also available at grocery stores September 18 – 20.

  • Shifts are just 1.5 hours long
  • Multiple locations available throughout the city
  • Perfect for families or groups (tailgate teams welcome!)
  • Volunteers receive a donation bucket, signage, and a commemorative t-shirt

Bonus Fun
Huskers Helping the Homeless will be headquartered at Tower Square on September 20th, offering free activities for all ages, such as yard games, cookie decorating, and face painting.

The “Why”
Matt Talbot provided nearly 250,000 meals last year through on-site prepared meals and food pantries – a 59% increase over the past five years. An average of 246 onsite meals are served every day, with staff assisting over 3,000 individuals through more
than 55,000 outreach and homeless prevention services annually. To meet these needs, a critical part of Matt Talbot’s game plan is to put together a strong roster of Huskers Helping the Homeless volunteers.

Go Time!
Form your team, start training, and get ready to provide the best defense against hunger and homelessness. Together, we can change the game for our guests and our community!
