The University of Nebraska’s Nebraska Writing Project offers a range of engaging camps for aspiring young writers from ages 7 through high school.
Young Writers’ Camp (Grades 8-12)
The Young Writers Camp offers a two-week program (Monday through Friday, 10am-1pm) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We host workshops in slam poetry, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, mystery, song-writing, poetry, memoir, and screen writing. Young writers work with professional writers, professors, teachers, and undergraduate interns!
In addition to attending camp and working with accomplished writers in the community, your writer will:
- Work one-on-one with a writing mentor
- Have their work collected in a YWC Anthology
- Give a public reading of their work in a celebration of writing on the evening of the final day of camp
This high-energy camp fosters a supportive writing community, interactive sessions, individualized support, and exposure to an exciting range of genres.
Dates: July 7-18, UNL City Campus, 10 am- 1 pm weekdays.
Age Range: Grades 8-12

I/We Love to Write (Ages 7-15)
The I Love to Write/We Love to Write Camps are a series of one-week summer writing workshops for youth to write in a supportive and fun environment. This year’s workshops will focus on a variety of writing styles, strategies, genres and activities. Sessions will meet on the UNL East Campus, and a public reading through at The Celebration of Writers Ceremony is held on the Saturday at the end of the week.
The We Love to Write Camp invites youth to write alongside a family member or adult in their lives, such as parents, grandparents, or mentors. Sessions feature interactive writing ideas and strategies.
These camps are led by Sandra Peter and Susan Dinsdale, experienced Lincoln Public Schools teachers of writing.
Dates: June 9-13
Location: UNL East Campus
Ages and Times:
- I Love to Write 1, Ages 7-11, 9:00-11:00 AM
- I Love to Write 2, Ages 12-15 12:30-2:30 PM
- We Love to Write, youth 7-15 plus family members or special adults, 4:00-6:00 pm
